 Headshot

Doug has been blessed by a life of music.  His first flute concert was to some ladies club in Berkeley when he was five, (and its been all down hill from there!).  As a youth in Bogota, Colombia, Doug's primary interest was in early music, fed by a talented expatriate community.  The life experience in Colombia had a deep effect on his musical sense, both in tone and rhythm.

As a child of missionaries, Doug spent a lot of time in Churches large and small of all faiths.  Nothing is more exhilarating to him than the awe of sacred space.  To listen to these spaces speak is divine delight.  Somewhere along the way, he began to add his voice to theirs as an expression of prayer.  At the beginning this was done strictly in private, but over time others came to sit and join in listening.

Soon, cathedrals of all creation began to call, and the flute being highly portable, Doug was seeking out mountain tops and canyons for his venues (some of which are shown in the Gallery). Life answers to music in most overpowering ways.  Have you ever "talked" with a hawk? Listened to stones sing? To waves carry the bass line? To trees ponder? Have you had fog roll up a mountain right through the stone tower under you while you greet the sun in tones of praise? Have you listened while a reflection of sound takes 3 seconds to return, and return, and to fill a valley in harmonies?

Now a father of six and a husband of 25+ years, Doug's life is full and frenetic.  He is able to play around town in coffee house venues, worship services and the occassional rock and roll club.  He performs with flute, baroque flute, indian flute, soprano and alto sax, various recorders and penny whistles.
