This article is written for a staff member that has been drafted into writing a technology plan.  You need a plan.  You need it quickly.  You don't want to look like an idiot.  You would like to be successful.   It sounds so simple.

Thank you for stopping in!      While you are here, please make sure to check out:

  • Blog: My work often involves the prototyping of ideas, and where possible I will share these ideas on the blog.  See the Philantropic Web tab for more.
  • Services:  The link for practical help in addressing a broad range of technology needs.

The Stack: What tools are used on this site?

  • Joomla:  this site is based on Joomla!, a well recommended Content Management System (CMS).
  • Google Sites: several sub-domains make use of Google Sites (a wiki).  It is clean and straight forward in what it does, and of course works smoothly with Google Apps (and is free).
  • Ning: the "create your own social network" people offer functions not available through Joomla or Google Sites, and using an as-supported model, is free (they can disappear for a small fee).
  • Blogger for the blog
  • SalesForce: the database that runs all of my business is SalesForce.
  • Graphics:
    • Jing: for screen capture and annotation
    • Picassa for image storage and slideshows
    • Zoomorama for large image navigation
    • Photoshop for advanced stuff

  • Do me a favor — vote for Perla Ni on the Huffington Post
Huffington Post is looking for readers to vote for the ultimate game changer in Philanthropy. And I think the readers have so far voted Perla Ni, head of greatnonprofits.org, to be the ultimate game changer. I’d like her to keep that lead and to do so, I urge you all to consider throwing in a [...]
  • Mobile phones to the rescue in Indonesia, Philippines and Samoa
From the UN Dispatch: Over the weekend a deadly tropical storm slammed into the Philippines, causing severe flooding in urban areas and affecting tens of thousands. Tuesday, a powerful underwater earthquake triggered a tsunami with waves 15 to 20 feet high that crashed into the Samoa islands, destroying homes and taking lives. Then yesterday and today two successive [...]

  • Practice What we Preach

My response (perhaps not so innocent?) follows: the asymmetry between the powerhouse that is SalesForce and the context of a nonprofit seeking pro bono assistance has major implications for any "
  • The Wow is back: The new Wave
Consider this a message from the latest car show by a friend thunderstruck by a new wonder machine.  On the one hand you know he is dazzled, but on the other hand a part of you wished you could play too - and this friend knows cars... so you listen, even if the friend is a bit tongue-tied.  Remember the first time you saw the Google search engine?   One little box? instantaneous
  • Follow up: Vista Acquisition of MicroEdge
This an update to my comments on the pending acquisition of MicroEdge by Vista Equity Partners: (for my original post, see http://tinyurl.com/luzo5y) Responsiveness : the new administration scored points right away by reaching out to me and offering conversation to discuss my concerns, and this by a lead director. As a symbolic action, it speaks to a change that is welcome. Caveat: as
